Mercury Contamination and Drinking Water

Mercury can enter the water system through the erosion of natural deposits as well as factory and landfill run-off. In 2011 Coal-fired power plants were responsible for approximately 50 percent of human-caused Mercury emissions. That same year the EPA finalized new air pollution limits that cut Mercury emissions by 91 percent. But Mercury is still making its way into the water sources such as rivers and lakes and can contaminate both drinking water and water for wildlife.
