New Positions:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission established the position of deputy executive director for Homeland Protection and Preparedness, naming William F. Kane to fill the role. Kane previously oversaw the offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Enforcement, Investigations, and the Regions.
The Organization of MISO States Inc., which oversees groups involved with the Midwest Independent System Operator Inc., officially formed its board of directors. Officers include Kevin Wright, commissioner at the Illinois Commerce Commission; Steve Gaw, commissioner at the Missouri Public Service Commission; and Laura Chappelle, chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission.
FPL Group Inc. appointed company veteran Armando Olivera president of its Florida Power & Light Co. subsidiary, promoting him from vice president of power systems. Olivera succeeds Paul Evanson, who was named Allegheny Energy's chairman, president, and CEO.
Michael J. Thompson, president of PSEG Global, will replace Thomas R. Smith as president of PSEG Fossil, a subsidiary of PSEG Power. Thompson's duties at PSEG Global will be assumed by Robert J. Dougherty, who is currently president of PSEG Energy Holdings. PSEG's director of development, Edward Sondey, will become vice president of finance and development for PSEG Power.
Constellation Energy Group said Peter Katz is the new vice president of Constellation Generation Group, assuming the duties of John T. Conway, who recently decided to step down as site vice president at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in New York. Katz most recently served as site vice president of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.
Glenn Cannon, chair-elect of the American Public Power Association (APPA) for the past year, was named chair of the APPA board of directors. Cannon is general manager at Waverly Light and Power in Waverly, Iowa. Also at APPA, Jan Schori was named chair-elect; Malcolm Green was named vice chair; Mark Crisson became immediate past chair; and Herman Morris Jr. stayed on as treasurer.
Sean McMaster was appointed president of TransCanada Power Services L.P. McMaster currently is vice president of Transactions and Power at Trans-Canada Corp.
John Wellard was named president of Union Gas Ltd., replacing Jane Peverett. Wellard has been with Union Gas since 1979.
Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee Chairman Pete Domenici announced that Karen Hunsicker Billups would become deputy chief counsel for the committee, effective July 7. She currently works for Entergy Corp. as its director of federal affairs. The committee also passed a resolution commending retiring Chief Counsel James Beirne for his 37 years with the committee.
Retirements:
Roy Hemmingway, chair of the Oregon Public Utility Commission, will retire Sept. 1. He has served the commission since May 2001.
Resignations:
R. Paul Grady, senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer for AmeriGas Partners L.P., will resign effective Jan. 9, 2004, to become president of Juice Bowl Products Inc.
Rewarded:
ConEdison Solution presented Mike Walsh with its annual President's Award, recognizing an employee who the company says "embodies and embraces customer focus, quality, interpersonal skills, industry change, teamwork, and employee development." Walsh is director of Business System Development at ConEdison Solutions.
