Utilities May Lose in FCC Rule Change
November 15, 1994
Representatives from the electric, gas, and water utilities met with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Reed E. Hundt in an attempt to force a compromise in a proposed rule change regarding radio frequency devices that operate within Part 15 frequencies.
Part 15 frequencies are used by utilities for remote meter reading as well as cordless telephones, and proposed rule changes would reserve use of such frequencies for the automatic vehicle monitoring (AVM) industry.
Initially, the FCC encouraged certain industries to use Part 15 frequencies, and indicated that the spectrum would always be available. Now the FCC plans to auction them. If assigned to AVM use, they would be sold to the highest bidder. t
